Some dubstep can be very dark, like Burial, you should check out "Untrue" by him.

Many variations of what "dark" is I see. Good to see Lustmord on the list.

You want "dark and trippy"?
I will recommend one album, a powerful journey to take.

The Eyes of Stanley Pain
by Download
previews

A multiple genre busting masterpiece. This album changed the way I think of electronic music forever. Best listened to as a complete whole.

Available on iTunes, emusic.com etc - or someone on Amazon is selling a sealed copy for $149!?!? Sad to hear it is out of print.

A variety of recommendations from me,

For supremely dark, excellent noise, try Ophidian and his other aliases, Meander and Raziel.

Trentemoller's The Last Resort is one of my favorite albums ever

Amon Tobin, cause hes the man

That is not instrumented for a rock band though. Not really. I think that it is something to listen too if you come from heavy metal though.

Regards.

i'd recommend everything by coil (but i'd also suggest you start with love's secret domain and musick to play in the dark albums.)

tricky - maxinquaye
tricky - pre-millenium tension

download - furnace
download - the eyes of stanley pain

cyclobe - luminous darkness
cyclobe - the visitors

thread - in sweet sorrow ep

Another vote for Download. Great stuff.

I'd have to say Velvet Acid Christ as well. Regardless of some opinions of Bryan based on his comments in/on this forum, the guy cranks out some really good music imo.

I'd also say Die Form makes very good dark music. Not necessarily "trippy", but dark and beautiful. The album "Extremum" in particular is excellent.

Man.. 4 pages mostly industrial hoo haa and not 1 mention for either Goblin or Wolf eyes. imo, those 2 very specifically meet the op's requirments - dark, trippy, use of live/ acoustic instruments.
although fsol- dead cities and plastikman, portishead are all very good suggestions except i dont know if hawtin/ plastikman seen an acoustic instrument in his life but trippy and dark none the less

In the techno / tech-house / acid realm I've found these producers to have a dark, foreboding sound in many of their productions:

Levon Vincent
Marcel Dettmann
Robert Hood
Basic Channel
Drumcell
Audio Injection
Chris Liebing
Speedy J
James Ruskin
Claro Intelecto
Dopplereffekt
David Caretta
Kyle Geiger
Steve Rachmad
Alex Bau
Daniel Bell aka DBX
Shed aka EQD aka Wax
Ben Klock
Donato Dozzy
Ambivalent
Gaiser
Tim Xavier

Highly recommend all of them.

Also, I will second the Burial recommendation in the dubstep world. Also highly recommend Scuba, Headhunter, and 2562 aka A Made Up Sound.

I love dark trippy music. So much so that I make it myself:

acid 24 | dholl

Lots of great suggestions in this thread, many I'll check out too. Sticking with dark ambient, I uploaded 3 of my favourites as they are relatively obscure and are safe to upload:

Einstürzende Neubauten (1989 - Germany):

YouTube - einstürzende neubauten - fiat lux, maifestspiele

Harmonia (1973 - Germany):

YouTube - harmonia - sehr kosmisch

Staruha Mha (2004 - Russia)

YouTube - staruha mha - arashamf

I'm also addicted to darkpsy (dark psychedelic trance):

YouTube - Goa Gil Massacre

Happy hunting!

It doesn't get much deeper & darker than Leo Anibaldi's "Void".

That album is a fantastic piece of experimental, dark techno. You have been warned!

Mannn..... Chris Clark is one of the best producers around today IMHO, esp if you're coming from a prog/metal background, kind of like Tool/Aphex Twin/The Prodigy!

The sounds he gets from his synths.... wow

I really like the stuff coming from Tympanik Audio (Tympanik Audio). Think a mixture of Skinny Puppy meets old school FSOL. Primarily (if not entirely) instrumental based industrial & glitch music with deep dark soundscapes. Much of it is very complex rhythmically and really fun to listen to. Highlights for me are the artists Disharmony, Subheim, ESA, Geomatic, Samhain... good dark trippy stuff in my book. - J.

When I think dark, I think like, Plastikman "Ask Yourself" or some of the Ostgut Ton stuff.
Hmm... what album(s) did you listen to?, 'cause their 80's stuff (and their first 2 90's albums) is pretty disturbing. Check these out:
YouTube - Skinny Puppy- Dead Doll
YouTube - Punk in Park Zoo's - Skinny Puppy
YouTube - Skinny Puppy- Quiet Solitude/ The Pit
YouTube - Skinny Puppy- Church
YouTube - Skinny Puppy- Falling

Burial! On the darkish side, trippy, but far away from cow slaughtering territory.
