Xbase is built of SMD components. This means not just smaller outfit but lack of audiophile quality. For example ceramic capacitors are used instead of film capacitors. Ceramic capacitors are better to avoid in audio applications because of their distortion and piezoelectric effect.
Jomox is a good design and quite cheap but with a compromise of less audio quality.

sampled into my MPC and saved as .wav files.

the link is not permanent.

crap - looks like some of the sounds aren't there - the file must have become corrupt... i'll get it sorted at some point - the samples are saved onto a ZIP disk and i need to get that all hooked up again.

You aren't by any chance the same Atsushi Hoshiai working for Roland's R&D department, are you? I've seen your name attached to a few Roland patents involving sampling techniques and tone generators, as well as a few other things. If you're willing (and legally able) to do a Q&A I'm sure a number of people on this forum would appreciate your insights in to Roland, the industry in general and the technology.

I didn't realize Atsushi Hoshiai was the man behind the 909! That's awesome! Q&A or not I have this to say to the man: THANK YOU! Your work has been influential over the music industry, and myself personally, in ways that I cannot measure.

lol sorry for the "atushi hoshiai confusion"

Unfortunately I hafta diappoint you guys. In fact I'm the guy behind that 909-site where the pic of Mr-909 is shown. I'm using this name for many years now and it's the first time, someome finds the connection between the name and the 909 or Roland. Ok, in this forum it might happen much quicker, but that's cool. heh

What I know is that Atsushi is a member of the huge Roland R&D department and he was involved in the 909 development. There was an interview with him in the german keyboard magazine back in the 90ies.
Anyway I tried to contact him some years ago. I found his e-mail address somewhere. At that time I was working for japanese company NEC and I tried to contact him through some kind of company to company mail. Unfortunately he didn't answer, but since NEC is also a japanese company and I know much about japanese company culture and I know it's hard to contact japanese guys, you didn't deal before, even when they're in the same company....heh

That's just impossible. The XBase is just a cheap copy with SMD components, so it sounds harsh and weak and totally unusable. No way it could ever replicate the sample-based sounds of a 909.

Yes I am a troll heh

The short end of it is, you're not gonna find anything that sounds like the 909 hi hats in the analogue realm. Some of the best analogue hi hats are in the MFB-503 drum machine.
