The BEST small synths...

I'm always looking out for cool compact synths to take on the road, I'd be curious what some of your favorites are.

Here are a few that I can think of...

1. MoPho
2. Evolver
3. Waldorf Blofeld
4. TB-303 heh
5. Technosaurus Micro II
6. Korg Micro (counts, it's such a tiny keyboard)
7. Novation Nova

Let's add more

anything that fits in a rack, and doesn't weigh more than 3 kilos.
there's plenty of nice rackgear, I hate carrying all kinds of cases (not 19") around

and if there's no rack ears, I'll screw the thing to a front panel.

my favorites are:

sh-2
system101 (not mine) - phenomenal
tb-303 (w doepfer midi-din)
rs7000 for sampling/sequencing/xox

others sml-but-great boards, that i don't own myself:

Blofeld - absolutely a winner in this cathegory i think
Acidlab Bombass - 303 with extras who sequencer
SH-101 (having a transposing seq and arp, is da bomb)
Korg R3
Nord Lead 2X (not exactly sml, but very easy to carry arround)

my 2 'mini synths': casio sk-1 and minikorg (from 1974, not the modern microkorg knock off). the virus desktop range is very portable and sounds amazing.. does the kore hardware with ni k5 count? i also have a lot of rack synths but some of them are pretty big and heavy, not very practical.

the adrenalinn 3, korg kaoss pad 3 and jomox t-rez are all portable and capable noise makers, at least one of these should be in your live set, along with a new novation zero sl mkII, apc 40, tenori on, etc. there's a resurgence of unique midi interfaces that are highly portable for live sets and kick tons of ass.

The Kaossilator is quite rad.

It is a real synth, and sounds big.

Yamaha CS-01. I love the batteries and built in speaker for sitting around anywhere and working out synth parts. Plus, when you plug it in it's got a nice, very usable analog sound.

Roland SH-32. Just fell in love with this thing again. Kind of an odd rompler meets VA concept in that the oscillators are samples of simple waveforms like a 303 saw, a Prophet square, etc. Realtime manipulation is pretty much out of the question because of the stepping, but for stuff like pads, it's a fun little beast.

When I think small, my fav's from own experience with them would be (in no particular order):-

- Nord Modular KB (the small G1 with 2 octave Keyboard)
- Novation Super Bass Station
- Waldorf Pulse/Pulse+
- Roland TB-303
- Roland MC-202

tbh, that's a brutally powerful little set of synths. The Nord goes in it's rucksack style gig bag & the rest easily fits in a small hard case or bag. The sort of set up that one man can easily carry on his own if need be. You could always substitute the 303 & 202 with a MonoMachine if you wanted to stay purely modern midi-based. You did say small synths...

i always loved the look of the SH-09 but it didnt really fit my sound so i passed it along to a friend who got far better use out of it running it thru his modular.

i like my lil microKorg.

Small, a live powerhouse for real-time tweak, and it can sequence up to 6 of your other wee beasties at the same time.

Ahhhh... the EDP Wasp. Brilliant! How could I have left THAT one out?

Perhaps THE best powerhouse synth in THE most toy-like package heh I love it.

Yea this is a real deadly combination right there..kind of hard to fit more synth power in square inches than that combo. Plus you could then run the nord through the micron's filters if you want harsher oscilators without the nord sounding filters...or run the micron oscilators through the nord filters..

BIG sound.
Appr. 10x16cm.
Small enough?

I'm enjoying this for the minute!

noise.io for the iphone/touch

Apart from that, the DX200 is fun and the LL Electronics Rozzbox is a killer unit. The new unit is pretty cool too as Bert mentioned.
