A great point.
To the sceptics (I used to be one) - bear in mind that 90% of any genre is, intentionally or otherwise, imitative.

Dubstep and minimal are two 'physical' bass and detail-led genres where saturation misleads perceptions and breeds cynicism.

Check out this link and watch the video made by the BBC in 2006.

BBC - collective - the sound of dubstep video feature, tracks and image gallery

I live 5 minutes walk from the club mentioned where DMZ used to have it's events. By the time of there 1st birthday in match 2006 they had to move into a larger venue (upstairs at the same club).

By DMZ's 2nd birthday in march 2007 the scene had exploded in London. It peaked late 2007. Good times.

Then it started to have repetative basslines, unimaginative tracks and the parties were overcrowded. The scene in 2008 definatly had lost someting.

Most power don't realise that Horsepower records where knocking out tracks in the early 00's:

Horsepower Dubstep Allstars Vol 1 Mixed by DJ Hatcha Album Review, New album reviews and latest album releases on Yahoo! Music

A mate of mine was writing about it in Mixmag when itwas known as Slo-Mo.

BOMB SQUAD on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

I can't front I wasn't a huge fan of the genre. Or I should say I didn't see the depth of it. Mostly because IMHO there were no solid albums. And yes I'd heard the Burial, but again IMHO its good for the first 20minutes which has been my general opinion of most dub step projects other than mixes. The mixes on the other hand are pretty cool. But my mind wasn't really blown until I heard these.

Enjoy.

well FM8 and Reaktor photone on the pads..strings are Kontakt (we have a Solina coming up were midifying atmo)..vocal is me on talkbox and dx100 (good ol zapp setup) took us like ages since I suck at it haha..cant remember what the lead is (its like 2 years since we did the track)..drums are good ol tr-808..2000f is blessed with his fathers studio..ssl mixing board, manley eq, Ln 1176, Distressors and whatnot..

funny thing about the track is, that when we made it back then, neither of us really believed innit..it was too odd for how dubstep was at the time...we just did it as a musical experiment to see what it would evolve into..like we wanted to fuse and see how far we could get with a dubstep boogie electrofunk detroitish kinda vibe..when we finished it we were like.. hmmmm ok..haha we couldnt even come up with a decent bassline so we just kinda left it out lol..then a lot of time went by and we just forgot about it, until Joker and especially Kode 9 started to play it and here we are today..

cheers and thanx for the nice comments

i was into dnb and heard some dub step

in LA i think 12th planet holds it down for dub step

for me

its all about the sub bass, bassy synth sounds lower tempo grooves

YouTube - 12th Planet-28 Hours Later

when i'm on the streets in a car i really like to listen to dubstep not so much while i'm on the freeway

I'm a trance junky but I found this tune on Youtube and it's defnintely got me bobbing my head.

YouTube - Florence & The Machine - Rabbit Heart (SLOF MAN & JOR ONE dubstep remix)

Listening to the structure and details of the music, I would have to agree that it is largely a live based attraction as even with some of the best dubstep tunes I've heard, I get board half way through.

I really like the ambient side of dubstep such as Burial. In fact, Burial was pretty much all I listened to in 2009. I try to produce stuff like Burial at home but it never works...

I really like this song by Wixel:

Tracks like the Datsik one are virtuoso, shiny and all, but have always hardly sounded fresh to my ears, and I've just suddenly understand why:YouTube - Mr. Oizo - Analog Worms Attack [HQ]

Not only the eponymous track, but the whole album, with "monday massacre" etc... While checking it on YT, I've seen that I'm not the only guy to see it as some "old school dubstep". Funny.

Where the originality of the genre lies for me, it's in those typical UK-garage beats with a really deep bass, rather than a saw/square, and a rich and cold ambience, such as the one posted by Lights Out Asia. Or of course the burial ones. But some say it's not really dubstep, right?

A big mitoo for Untrue! It have been my "aaaah the fΓΉ%"er!!" of the year 2008.

Four pages of messages on Dubstep, and nobody has mentioned one of the essential elements of it: Da Wobble Bass.

Another important element: Subs that hit you in the chest like a variable speed jackhammer.

It helps to have interesting music weaving in and out of the wobble bass too, so that the people will weeble and wobble but won't fall down.

The wobble is usually done with a saw/square/pulse wave of some kind (you need upper harmonics) with a sine/tri LFO on a low pass filter center point with enough resonance to get the WWWUHWWWUHWWW sound. Then the LFO needs to be synced to BPM, then some modulation of the BPM divisor, so that you can stay in sync but move between rates such as 1/4 to 1/16 of the beat. The modwheel is the obvious choice for the BPM modulation. If the LFO offers a sync/phase/offset to control the starting position, then you want it to start at the bottom trough of the wave, +270deg or -90deg. This ensures that the LFO starts by opening up the LPF from low to high. I like using aftertouch to increase the wobble rate, while using the mod wheel to set the baseline rate.

That's the basic wobble, but it's more of a theme and starting point for variations. A lot can be done with more complex filter types, different LFO shapes, distortion, gating sync'd to the beat, and resonance modulation.
