RE-201, 301, 501 -- keep only two

OK - since forums seem to be the place to ask questions that only the poster can really answer, I'm throwing this out:

If I am keeping a Korg SE-500 Stage Echo and a tube Klemt Echolette tape echo, which 2 Rolands should I keep to go with them?

I'm thinking the -501 and ...

?

I've only got an RE-150 and a couple RE-201's so I'm not the best person to answer this but... I've often heard the RE-201 has the most "character" of the bunch and many apparently prefer it's sound, but on the other hand the RE-501 has balanced outputs which has always piqued my interest in the unit. In my area I've noticed people tend to have no problem selling the RE-201's, sometimes for high prices, but RE-501's are being sold fairly cheap by comparison and for what they are -- though that could be people buying up the RE-201's due to the popularity of the recent digital pedal thingy Roland released. Anyhow, you might have an easier time selling the RE-201 for a good price, given what it is.

501 has the biggest feature set, 201 is simplest. I've owned a 201 and none of the others. Clean telecaster through that thing was instant "Candy Store Rock" off Zeppelin's "Presence" album.

In a word, gorgeous.

I just love the 301. Sort of like the 501 with more sound characteristics of the 201. If it were me I would keep the 301 and the classic 201.

Thankfully I have never used a real tape echo (apart from my rusty old Echolette 5 which I only use as a sound source for these crackling noises coming from the completely worn-out tape loop and some nice feedback - I never use the input jack!), so for echo purposes I am perfectly happy with my Boss RE-20 and a couple of old no-name BBD devices.

Sorry, I'm sure this will be of no help at all - just a different view on things...

Cheers,
Bert

I have a 301. I love it. Keep the 301 and the 501.

To me, the 301 is a compromise of the qualities of the 201 (euphonic tape tone) and 501/555 (different tape tone + features).

If I had to make that choice, I'd keep the 201 and the 501. Hey! I had to make that choice once - and I kept the 201, 501, and a 555!

I can kinda understand that as I also have a Moog MF-104SD. That said, BBD delay is BBD delay, and it is wonderful for what it is - but it isn't the sound of my 201 in all its glory.

Putting a 201 in the loop of the MF-104SD (along with MuRF and Empress Trem) is the business!

cheers,
Ian
