Interestingly Waldorf has been selling the same synthesizer for about what, 36 years? This time the packaging and the price seems very decent. But if it again sounds like Micro Q, Blofeld, Q, XTk... I know I will probably find it a bit stiff and precise, a little too far away both from the original Junos and the PPG. However, I will probably get one, if not for the occasional fun of unpackaging, installing, sequencing and naming my own patches. ;-)

Im out, tierd of crappy quality.

At first glance, it seems interesting, but then it feels too much like a Microwave VST packaged in hardware with perhaps "too compact" controllers...

And for a good workflow, an editor app/software would certainly be essential, and Waldorf hasn't exactly been known for that in the past...

Let's wait and see what details and information the first videos will reveal about the Protein M-Shake.

I guess at least it has stereo outs. (alas no audio inputs, sync or mix through, which seems quite common on other cheaper devices these days)

Perhaps this will be the 1st one of a range. (Which different pastel base colours, like the Aira Compacts). .....Maybe one in 'Sea green' or 'Plankton Grey?

I got 3 wavetable synths, Waldorf M, Freds Lab Töröö and a PPG Wave 2.0. They all sound different and i l o v e the wavetable concept. Very curious already to hear the Protein.

Based on the jacks on the back, this pic (as rendered on my laptop screen in Gearspace post preview) appears to be close to actual size. Smaller than a Roland SH-4d (got one sitting right here, just looked at it for comparison), bigger than an Aira Compact. Not sure of the actual size of Volcas, but maybe this is a tad bigger?

I guess for someone wanting Waldorf wavetables in a small package, this would be good for them. Not a good sound design synth though unless there's a good computer editor.

When tweaking sounds, what are the things I usually reach for the most? Filter cutoff and resonance, and envelopes. This thing needs envelope knobs.

It doesn't need envelope specific controls, those are very well designed, one knob can control the whole envelope.

And talking about controls, the original highly respected MW has one alphadial.

Why these mini jack for heads-phones and midi?

The Quantum/Iridium never really captured the grungy girth of the original era wavetable synths, so I wouldnt describe the relationship between this new product and the Quantum/Iridium in that way at all. The fact the Quantum/Iridium didnt really bring that to the table is why there was room for things like the M in their lineup in the first place.

So long as this sounds good in that area when we get to hear demos, I think this synth will do really well and they will sell a lot of them. You only have to read many of the M and Microwave plugin user opinions over recent years to see that yes, there is something sought-after from synths that can deliver the sound of the Microwave. Not everyone cares about the areas of sound where that synth is strong, but thats normal enough, we wouldnt expect universal praise for any synth.

I was of course trolling a bit, playing devils advocate.
But i genuinely don't understand the appeal of the 'Microwave sound'. It just sounds harsh, lofi in a bad way and the high frequency noise makes me feel uncomforteable.

I understand certain lofi noise provides more to bite into, for a filter, and can add presence. But dialing in some noise always worked just as well?

So can anyone here post a few examples of timbres that are typical of that Microwave 'sound' and that might appeal?

Doesn't have to be pretty, i appreciate a rancid, grungy synth sound just as much. But it does have to somehow spark an interest. And i'd like to understand the why.

If it sound like the MW plugin in a box, i‘m in. Assuming the „envelope“ knobs are at least some kind of macro control.
