OB-6 vs Diva - Blind Test

Hi all, it's been a while...

Some of you may remember me from tests such as this and this...

Well I'm still alive, and have been playing with the OB-6 synth to see how it fares and have compared it to Diva so here is another test for you!

Looking fwd to hearing what you think...is it closer than the OB8 and how do the effects compare on the OB6?!

Top fun!

First to say - you've done an absolutely superb job here.

I voted. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think either synth is necessarily 'better', but I can definitely discern a difference on most of those patches... Not that I can necessarily tell which is which, just that I can hear that they are not the same.

One sounds creamier and thicker, but a little fudgier and smeared... This could be what you want in some contexts, but in other contexts the cleaner precision of the alternative might be favourable.

Yes! Good to have you back and thanks for the new comparison video. I love these. Mainly because people get so irrationally upset.

Also, I vote Diva as synth A.

Diva is the one that sounds better.

(i am just back from a bicycle ride, so my ears are not in the best shape to listen and give my serious vote)

I think the real question is what one do you prefer?

A sounds more immediately impressive and "finished".
B sounds more natural so I feel that is the OB-6.

i think the sync sound will be a give away to those that know the synth (not me)

for me i say A is diva - the area at around 4..30 and the sync make me think it

regardless - it sounds amazing but we know that

never played diva or ob6

Prefer most of the examples of A -- especially on the pad/poly sounds. More high end, width, phasiness, and better envelope settings. But the more focused lead and bass sounds of B tend to suggest that B is the OB-6.

Diva is one hell of a plug-in.

I think A is Diva.

I use Diva on daily basis so it's just based on what I think Diva sounds like..

"Synth A" sounds in some patches more "alive" to my ears so DIVA should be B or else the OB-6 would be an overpriced toy

I slightly preferred the sound of A in most of the examples and therefore I would assume it was hardware so am going to say Diva is B logically. The distinction between software and analog hardware recorded into the digital realm is almost insignificant and has been for quite some time.

A is diva. I think diva sounds great until you start eqing the sounds... another thing also is the sounds are quite static, if you would slowly open the filter on both I think it would be easy to spot... that's me trying to justify my ob

What are you listening on?

On my Sennheiser HD650, 'A' sounds much more precise, sharp, sterile, thin.
'B' sounds thicker, weightier (more body, wider spectrum of harmonics), warmer.

I'm pretty confident A is Diva.

The thinner synth A might sometimes be easier to fit into a mix and it has a more precise, HD, cleaner, forcussed sound to my ears.... But I'm surprised to read you think it sounds more 'alive', as I thought B sounds wilder, more organic, richer. B has an extra je ne sais quai of magic. In my opinion.

If B is Diva, I'd be very happily surprised.

On some of the examples I preferred A, because it was cleaner and sharper focussed.
It totally depends on the context of the mix as to which would be 'better'.

Voted B as Diva

In examples A I tend to hear the filter and resonance as separate entities which is kind of a trademark sound (to my ears) of Sequential instruments of that era.

B sounds more compact and homogeneous.

But then, what do I know and I could be completely wrong. Thanks for the fun quiz!

listened thru a DT-770-Pro by Beyer Dynamics and to my ears Synth A had more "OSC Mojo", so DIVA must be B cause of that

We will know soon what was what!

A is Diva

I liked both for different things! A sounded cleaner and more hifi. Also heard some other noise artefacts like noise floorish things in B. Also voice stealing but that might have been a red herring << (still think A is diva, happy to be proved wrong though!)

Yeah i got all the same things there too. I felt a bit more emotion from B but it was easier to 'see' A due to less width (listening on dt770 pros)

Mr Swan is a tricksy rapscallion and has been known to insert noise floor recordings under soft synths to throw us off the scent!

But in this case, I do agree with your choice of synth.

Yeah i wondered as some of them are a bit obvious

there is also some bass fluctuations that really feel like a real thing hitting some outputs/inputs/convertors/something

it s not really close... sound like 2 different synth or fxs yes , B sound better and i guess it s the software.. or could just be the hardware.. but as it sound way more flattering to me i will guess it s the software tweaked better.

synth B sound more flat and 2d also it made me think it s the plugin but diva has big depth and 3d they really nailed it so it dosen t necessary mean it s the plugin , B sound way better to me it has the little something that make me vibrate inside while A not at all but i have no idea wich is wich .
i guess it s very tricky to get that close even if it s not that close well you see what i mean so congrats man, i for sure wouldn t be abble

Definitely heard some voice stealing on B. Also more high frequency content in A. It sounded like the filter was just a bit more closed on B, A had a bit more bite. But nicely done matching the patches!

They both sounded very close, and while there was an occasional difference, with A sounding like the brighter of the two, I wouldn’t pick a preference. I would say that A is Diva.
