I'm really over those nasty little 2 x 16 char LCD screens Roland keep using ... retro gear is great, but nobody's nostalgic for menu diving in calculator displays

Hopefully the song mode might make it over to the 707 in the next update

Here for the gear

As an MV-8800 owner I'm excited but it seems it little dumbed down by comparison. Maybe that's a good thing though?

It follows the current Aira grooveboxes in being small and simple but one of the main strengths of the older MV's was the sampling which this unfortunately lacks, as pulled from Roland's specs: User Sample (as a Tone or Drum Kit): available by importing from SD card.

Also the screen, but I don't think that needs explaining.

As an alternative for Dawless users, it looks like a win though. It's seems easy to use and has a powerful effects section. With a song mode and tr-rec style sequencing, I find it hard to dismiss especially if used for getting ideas down quick.

I use an MV-8800 as the center of my studio. I can't see this replacing that but on it's own merits as an easy-to-use small workstation, I don't see it as bad.

TL;DR... Meh. Not bad, but nothing really exciting. Hopefully updates remedy the sampling.

edit: At $700 it's not a bad deal. Puts it directly against the MPC One. So, an MPC alternative much like the older MV's were.

not for me, but these will sell well imho, if the price is right, it's a perfect starting point for beginners.

Ehmm because the mc707 is crippled in the areas of song mode and recording audio parts, they made another $700 box? Unimpressed. “Collect em all” Pokémon style doesn’t work in this price segment I’m afraid.

i don't as yet understand the design choice to constrict 3 tracks to just kick, snare and hi hat....
and just 1 drum kit of 16 sounds

seems to fill the gap from the mc 101 to the mc707 in some aspects.

i'd guess the competition will be:
digitakt
mpc one
akai force
mpc live 2
maschine plus

Which device do you think it competes most strongly against - is it the MPC?

i'm disappointed and somewhat confused at a number of design outcomes n the wavelab.

Q. why constrain certain tracks to only be kick snare hi hat etc...?
Q. only 1 vocal track... how do you add backing vocals then?

Roland mc101 has 4 tracks but you can choose what they are.

According to the leak its price it is going to be $ 700. This new Roland groovebox is awesome it looks like a winner to me. Recently, I got both the TR6s and the MC 101, I will get and this one and I won’t resist.

Its workflow it doesn’t look anything like the cumbersome MC 707/101, it looks like Roland they move forward fast in order to please their customers. Now I have to look for the details though, I need to know the detailed specs in order to have a complete opinion about this new beauty…

Although, I would like to ask you what do you mean when you say that it has 3 separate tracks dedicated to Kick, snare and hi hat, and 1 track for the other 16 drum/sample sounds. Where did you find this information? According to Rolands website it has 7 tracks + 1 vocal track, it has the same number of tracks as the MC 707.

the front panel text and also the specification page on rolands site.

The design seems to be to make is very simple to use with minimal menu diving.
