I'd like some expansion pack creation tips too. My goal is to make one out of sampling some of my acoustic instruments, complete with 4 different velocity layers per pad.

for those on mac, i downloaded app called keka to extract folders from the xpn's to put on my sd card. Works a treat.

(ok not really a luddite just no interest in installing mpc software, whole reason I got the X was for standalone music making )

Have you got any tips on autosampling in general? I've been trying to do an ELZ pack but I'm kinda fumbling about and not getting very far.

will do a vol 2 soon, maybe sample the analogue side of the JDXA in depth so I can have something resembling an 8 voice analogue Roland


No real tips, its all just a bit of hit n miss experience


for short hits just keep it around 2ms with a short tail. (make sure you dont have the looping on)

Lead I do 4 or 5ms with a longer tail if needed, pads 6-7ms with much longer tails, sometimes as much as 4-5ms...if its too much I just roll back the release on the synths patch as itll cut off meaning its hard to end a piece with the pad fading out.

pretty basic...for place holders I just make the stride 2-4 notes, for stuff I just want to use in the MPC or a synth Im selling I just do it 1 stride...velocity layers will just eat up your RAM so unless its acoustic I avoid layers

Is there a way to audition these keygroups on the MPC standalone hardware without just auditioning the individual wavs?

Thank you to kcearl and everyone else for all these great samples. Just bought an MPC One and I thought it was going to take years to fill up my SD card, but here we are.

Most of them should have previews and they should play as you click through the keygroups in the browser. I made a few before I knew how to make previews so at the bottom of my main download theres an XPN previews download. Theres some files in there with the missing previews (you just drop the corresponding folder into its Expansion folder on your sd card)

Thanks a bunch for all these, must've been hours & hours of work. Just put an SSD in my Live finally so will be exporting all these later on.

I can't see the folder with the preview files in though - dropbox won't let me move around your folders, I guess that might be why - any chance of a link to that please?

Awesome, Stew, you're doing the Lord's work. Just one thing, I couldn't get BoC Vol 2 previews to work because the mp3 file names have ".Keygroup" in them, which this BoC volume is the only one that doesn't follow that convention in the Keygroup file names. I got the previews to work when I removed this from the file names though.

Ah, good spot. I've just changed the filenames in the dropbox folder so hopefully they should be OK now.

I had a couple of different versions in different places and obviously uploaded the old one. Weird that it needs xxx.keygroup.xpm.mp3 on most expansions but not on that one though.

I've been meaning to make some other expansions - I have a load of Samples From Mars stuff I want to use - but can't figure out how to package the audio previews with the xpn file (using the Expansion Builder). Do they need midi sequences present in order for the Builder to create them or something?

As samples from mars are samples themselves there's a legal problem in making expansions with them, same with kontakt libraries etc. you can make them for yourself of course but sharing them would likely be an issue

Re Samples From Mars: they have started including Live/X programs with their newer releases. All drums so far I think (including their latest - Wendel From Mars), dunno if they'll do keygroups. But if you search MPC Live on their site, it brings up the 6 or so sample packs.

Periodically they do a stupidly cheap 'get everything on the site' deal for about 40USD.

Got most of their stuff, one of my favourite sample suppliers...real quality

some of the more modern sets have Live/X pgms in them, the rest you'd have to convert.


If you purchase Kit-Maker, its only $25, it can convert the machine versions into the MPC format (or most formats too). The new beta for it also automatically makes previews and colours the pads according to sounds...great little programme

Not its not an XPN (expansion) file. Its just a folder with MPC formats in it...you can use the expansion maker to make an XPN though
