Ensoniq ESQ-1, SQ-80 - ultimate patch collection

Feel free to share these patches with a valid link to this thread. Please do not resell or redistribute on your own such as Google Drive, Mega, etc. Thanks!

These 4500 patches originate from SQ-80 floppy disks available at: [www.buchty.net] Section Ensoniq

A few weeks ago i contacted Rainer Buchty regarding the extraction of original SQ-80 floppy disks. He soon wrote a C program to extract program banks from the floppy image files and to de-nibble the data (for SYX purpose). The rest was easy, i just had to split the binary files in Linux, name them correctly and test them to make sure the translation went smooth.

If you wonder why some banks are "missing". Well, they aren't. They were duplicates and i deleted them. This will save you some time when loading patches hence you won't have to load duplicate banks.

SQ8L folder contains patches from SQ8L software. I just thought i should add these since they are sort of "best of everything" to give you a quick access to cool sounds.

But, you will have to import them one by one.

Sorry if my question is dumb, but I am new to synths. I have an ESQ1 and most of the factory sounds are missing or corrupt. The backup battery is new. It will play sounds from an external cartridge. I am currently trying to grasp Midi-ox and SysEx to load the internal banks. I tried to restore the original sounds using the pin shorting method, but that did nothing.

Can these patches be used on an ESQ1?

Thanks...Rich

1. Press and hold the (RECORD) button
2. Press Soft button (1) (upper left hand corner of screen), then release both buttons.
3. Display = ERASE ALL MEMORY AND RE-INITIALIZE
4. Select YES. The display returns to the sign-on message. All RAM is erased and all internal programs are reset

What's the best way to get these into the board? and do you know of any librarians/editors I can use? This thread is what made me take notice of an ESQ1 for sale locally which I grabbed for $50!! Thanks Don.

I have one of those 1280 sound cartridges with the switches built in ( like having 16 carts) , are these new patches from the same source?

I wrote an article about this topic:

How to upload SYX files to synthesizer via MIDI or USB | donsolaris.com

However one important thing you have to set on Ensoniq before uploading any patches:
  1. Press the MIDI button
  2. Press bottom-right soft button below the screen where display says ENABLE = KEYS + CONTROLLERS
  3. Push cursor key up until display says ENABLE = KEYS + CT + PC + SS + SX

Ironically not only ESQ-1 share the same filter with the mega expensive Prophet VS, it uses the same form of interpolation. Funny to see their price ratio is 1:10 (in this case). LOL.

I find it such a pity there is no unison mode (with detune) on Ensoniqs. That would sound unreal good.

A small side-note you should keep in mind. SQ-80 has a different summing stage. To quote Rainer, try the "SYNBAS" OS3.5 preset on ESQ-1 and SQ-80 and you will get the idea.

Also, since SQ-80 is more opened in high freq, i imagine some things should sound sort of a "samey" after a while. The reason is the form of interpolation that Ensoniq uses that on high frequencies just make things sound ... kinda the same. ESQ-1 at least filters these, so you stay more focused on the low frequencies and what's happening there. Not saying that SQ-80 bad in any way, just wanted to point this before you shell out the cash and then notice this later.

Don, thanks for the reset directions. That was the first thing I did (multiple times) when I discovered the internal banks were wiped. My synth has the V3.5 upgrade installed. It came with five sound carts. One of them was corrupted with incomplete or scrambled sounds and cryptic titles. After I removed that cart I discovered all internal sounds were gone. I even did a hard reset by shorting the right side lead of C18 to the left side lead of CR3, to no avail. I filled the internal banks with patches from Laser Mammoth which stay in memory. I just can't figure why I can't get the factory sounds back. Anyway, it was very nice of you to post the sound library and Thank You very much!

Does it pass thru all 4 points that i wrote down, or is there an error in the process?

Don, happy to tell you the factory sounds are back! I came to ignore the momentary error display, but know it was system error 3 something. I was up late determined to check all the internal connections, even removing the keyboard. Although the upgrade chips looked seated, the end of one closest to the keys seemed to have a little play when I pushed down on it. I then did another hard reset. When I powered it up, no error, and the internal 1 sounds appeared! I will make sure to write the patches I like to my hard drive. Thanks again for your wisdom!

esq-1 drums

Hey all,
Cooked up a few drum sounds to use in your old ensoniqs or SQ8L. Mostly in the 808/909 vein. Included is a little note to my bud that explains stuff. Hope they can be of some use. If you can modify/improve anything, let a brother know.
Enjoy,
Wayners

I have made an online SysEx librarian which supports the ESQ-1. It works in the Chrome browser.

You can rename and sort patches and build your personal *best of* bank.
You can directly send and receive from ESQ-1 and even pre-listen to patches without overwriting because patches are loaded to the edit buffer of the ESQ-1.
It's free to use except you want to create a lot of banks.

This is a great collection! Went through a few banks on my (neglected) SQ-80 and I'm definitely impressed by what I've heard. I was unable to send some banks, for example CLASSIC A1 from the SQ-80 Factory Disk, which I'll have to look into a bit more.

Any recommendations for good banks? Things I especially like from the SQ-80 are cheesy choir sounds (like AHHHS from one of the factory banks), simple analog style poly sounds (pads, strings etc.) and rough digital bass sounds (no Moog imitations!).
