i would much prefer these sort of discussions in a pub with a pint and a pie or over a table of gear and speakers, i hate that most of my synth discussions are across a damn wire and especially when crossed opinions are prevalent, it would be much better in person so we could hear each others laughs instead of just interpreting text, often quite badly

certainly less expensive and most likely a lot more rewarding than seeing someone once a week in a smug office filled with bad paintings

Subtle digs and playful ribbing often come across as arrogant condescension ... the problem being that I am all about subtle digs and playful ribbing.

Hence why I bought the Boog and the Grandmother.

I've taken the trouble of deleting everything that is either a standard feature on dozens of other instruments, or for which there are similar combinations of features available as such. (Honestly, you listed 'USB & MIDI' like it was some big deal?)

What you're left with is ... (and much of this is questionable)

• 3x VCOs per Voice with Variable Wave-Shape & OLED Screen per VCO (as opposed to 2)
• 2x Filters per Voice with Filter Mixing (kinda cool)
• 3-Part Multi-Timbral (one more than standard 2-part ... REVOLUTIONARY!)
• Eventide Hall Effect (I left this, as Eventide FX are special)
• 4x Hardware Inserts (6.3mm Stereo Jack)

I'm not trying to be a pest. I think the dang thing is cool. But groundbreaking or unique? Other than it's "Moogness" (which might be enough) ... not really so much.

Well, given that a number of my synths don't even have MIDI, yes this is a big deal!

I've also been putting the Moog One under the microscope as I'm considering buying one once they arrive in Europe and I've had a chance to play it. As neither a rich person or a chump (or a dentist ), you can be sure I won't buy it unless I'm convinced of its potential relative to my needs and abilities.

Again, it's the composite I find innovative. Individually, it's possible that only the oscillators are truly "innovative" in the strictest sense.

Here's what i'm thinking,,,,,,,, Nearest thing to UB-Xa would be a DSI Prophet Rev 2 8 voice, They are $1500 for keys version. Rev 2 has 5 octave keys and more features than UB-Xa (more lfo's,fx ,oled screen etc.). It's also made in U.S. (higher labour costs).

We have noticed over the last few months a drop in price with Deepmind 12.

At this point i'm thinking Behringer will go for the jugular and do UB-Xa keys for $999 and desktop for $799-850.

They will test the water with UB-Xa (but i'm sure already plenty of market research has been done )..... If all goes well expect other classic polys to follow.

Thats user experience and not innovation. Most people dont have a user experience with neither the Moog One nor the UB-XA, i even doubt there is one whos got both and could compare.

Here is a definition of innovation from wikipedia.

In that sense, both the developement of a new big polysynth like the Moog One AND the development/re-engineering/adapting of a past behemoth synth liek OB-XA into a modern SMT affordable package is innovative.

Its not a football match. Both Behringer and Moog can be innovative (at different angles) at the same time, despite the rivalry of its fans.

I agree it's best to stay on topic. But it wasn't robinkle's post which led us off-topic but rather this one:

Criticizing another company for not being innovative in a thread about the re-issue of a synthesizer that was designed nearly 40 years ago is absurd.

When these kinds of statements go unchecked, it devalues not only this thread but the forum in general.

I'm as excited about the UB-Xa as anyone. But continued hyperbolic praises of Behringer such as the one above intermingled with slags against other companies will make participation in this thread challenging for me.

To this point - I would definitely be interested in buying one, as it might very well be the only production instance of a full Curtis-flavored end-to-end analogue VCO chip + filter IC polysynth in this century, made with SMT parts. In this regard, the innovation is in the productization and manufacturing, and not so much in the concept (as loosely compared to the Neutron).

In fact, "innovation" with regard to subtractive analogue synthesis is largely undefined / fluid, if anyone in fact actually buys musical instruments solely on that basis (ask Henry Juskiewicz - ehh, never mind). There are a lot of clever ideas and implementations out there, but everyone has their own idea of "innovative", as assessed from the perspective of their own self-perceived level of genius....

It's a standard feature on just about every polysynth made for decades now. The nature of your personal collection does nothing to counter this fact, or somehow make these features "special".

I know 70s technology wasnt as developed and diverse - but seriously, who at Oberheim choose to include such fragile connectors back in the day?! Wtf?

I like synths that make sounds to my liking, and fit into my workflow (and budget). That’s what enables me to make my music. It has almost nothing to do with how innovative they are.

The OB-Xa was not a terribly innovative synth. It has essentially the same features as its predecessor, the OB-X, and it sings through hardware that is very similar to the Prophet-5. t is a classic because its tone, aesthetic and heft somehow just speaks to musicians.

Unfortunately the Moog One is expensive enough to relegate it to unicorn status. Few of us will ever really dig deep into it, so those of us who judge it will sadly do so based on hearsay. (You can argue 2018 vs 1978 pricing all you want - it is simply not competitive in today’s synth world). Other unicorns include CS-80, PPG, DX1, Synergy, Synclavier, Synthex, Polymoog, Schmidt, 2500 etc - we nerds know a lot about them but may have only ever briefly touched one or two. Judging a Moog One is like judging a Bugatti after seeing it on Top Gear.

If a Moog One is a unicorn then the Arp 2500 is the meaning of life.

The follow-on question (IMHO) is why some manufacturers continue to make such poor design decisions.

Last but not least, believe it or not, I'm not so narrow-minded or self-centered as to think that my personal collection or personal experience changes objective reality for others. That notion is even sillier than my joke (not to mention insulting). But seeing as this is Gearslutz, where such things DO happen, it's forgivable.
