A question like "what is this?" Should not be asked for such a piece of gear.... Especially at a place with the name of gearslutz.

Its like why do people spend 200,000 dollars on a car when they can buy one for 40,000 or 10,000, I think the conclusion is obvious.

I still wonder how it sounds.

Senior moment flashback, back in the day I was playing in a band.
We were always looking to record and had no money, sound familiar?
A friend of mine was interning at Intergalactic Studios, they let us record for free for a few nights.
My buddy was showing us this new weird keyboard they had that Afrika Bambaataa had just recorded a song they called Planet Rock on.
We played around on the Fairlight not totally grasping what it was.
We were more Rock oriented, later realizing the significance of this seemingly strange quirky keyboard was eye opening! ;-)

Why bother to even make music. Just buy an MP3, less bother.

When you have over $10 million in the bank, what else are you going to spend it on?

it actually looks like it's the CMI-30A reissue, not the original fairlight. Notice the iphone holder and the lack of 8" floppy drives. So he actually spent $17k on the new one and not the $3-5k for the vintage one. Meh, whatever, it's in the same album of him with his porsche talking about how he went "115mph"...is that even worth talking about? meh...we get it, you have money. Still lame to me.

Or they just want to enjoy life, it's not really a big deal, and in the end it's none of our biz where he (or anyone making a lot of money) is spending their money on.

Nice Fairlight. It would be fun to mess with one of those for a bit. I'm sure he'll do something creative with it.

none of our business?
then why is he showing to everybody?

edit: I have no problem with it.. I actually like how he is a bit more personal than most "famous" people.

and this confirms it. Direct from the horses mouth, he bought the one they displayed at NAMM. I guess he came with a checkbook and wasn't leaving without something :P
Good for him. A sale like this is probably a big boost to a specialist synth company that is currently seeking funding.

given they're only making 100 of them (at apparently $20,000 AUS a pop) I can't imagine too many people are using em! Honestly, this thing does seem a bit overpriced, considering it's likely a modern PC with some emulation bits and perhaps a fancy sound interface (though I could be wrong)..the keyboard is just a fatar so that's nothing too special...

I think the very thing that makes the Fairlight a pain (programming) could very well be the catalyst for the music that comes out. Limitation provides the frame and shapes the work. And if I was in the market for a Fairlight, I'd probably want the new one also. Have you seen what Office Max is charging for 8" floppies these days???
