Ok, so what is so fracking special about this thing that someone would spend $20k on it? I'm pretty ignorant about samplers.

I agree. On their site there is mention of a new product.

"We are also developing an entirely new keyboard product, quite unlike anything previously made by Fairlight β€” or anyone else.

All will be revealed at NAMM in 2013."

Anyone have any news?

it's glorified interface to the fairlight ipad/iphone app :P

ok not really. Supposedly it's got some fancy sound processing chip called CC-1:

Specifications | Peter Vogel Instruments

however there is a fairlight ipad app, just sayin'...I mean if you're using modern hardware just for the vintage interface...yeah...why pay the vintage prices? It's nostalgia for sure, but if you really wanted to be nostalgic you'd want a vintage machine...with the original voice circuits and what not, I mean that's the real charm of the fairlight that made it unique from other samplers...just playing back samples isn't a unique feature at all.

perhaps it is just a project to earn some investments for peter vogel instruments, who knows, I don't have a problem with that per say, but this is hardly a vintage fairlight anymore than my ipad fairlight app :P

It's kind of like driving a classic car. Yes it costs more than its function should allow, but it's an iconic piece of gear that was one of the defining sounds of the 80s. I don't know if the repro uses all of the same original components, but if you grew up listening to that orchestra hit, or the breathy vocal sound, etc, there's a magic to that machine. I'm glad for him. He's obviously excited about it.

If I had DM's money, I'd probably have bought one, too.

Maybe deadmau5 will use this new piece of gear on his next album...? I really don't see how his purchase here can lead anyone to make any statements about the quality of his character, or his mental state.

Deadmau5 is doing good things for hardware, all thoes small companies will get more funding which could lead to more products.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that most of his fans are old enough to afford any of the gear in his studio.

It's what I would do. Certainly better than buying gold chains.

I'm pretty curious to hear what he has up his sleeve in regards to film scoring, though. He's expressed some interest in it. Maybe we'll finally hear all of that Modular gear that he's amassed. This clip that he made was pretty cool, I'd buy an album of this stuff:

Not so into the untz untz untz stuff though.

I hope he enjoys it and has a blast.

It's good to have gear that's fun and inspiring, even if all you do is mess around with it. You don't have to feature every piece of equipment prominently in the latest track to justify its purchase. Sometimes we can buy things just because we enjoy them.

I love using the Fairlights. Nothing hard about it. Dead easy.
Great sounding and great operating system.
Big heavy and a pain to keep going (the old ones) but IMHO worth it.
And yes, you do stuff more easily today but that doesn't mean you can do it as well or with as much fun (which in turn can be inspirational)
Not for everyone though and all in my opinion of course.

Aside the stellar production, Boris swears over his Fairlight. Even in an interview in something as late as 1990.

I remember seeing Mike Oldfield live in 1984, when I was kid, and he had a fairlight onstage. I thought it looked like you could send a rocket to the moon from that stage, so much gear!!

I felt g.a.s. though I didn't know what it was at the time

I'll admit my g.a.s. for a Fairlight has receeded along with my life being so tied to computers already, but it still has an inherent charm.

Yes. His early stuff was Series II and his later Series III. I remember hearing "One Second" for the first time and being BLOWN away by the production. I was in the back of a DJ's car and he blasted it. Must have been 1987/8
It probably pushed me into getting my own CMI.
These days it might be considered limited but that is a bit the problem with how we perceive things now.
The Series III "only" has 16 voices but the way it deals with them is great. 16 tracks on page R. Each linked directly to a voice. ZERO timing issues. You can link them for polyphony. Page R itself is a joy to use. If you want to go further it has CAPS which is a complex arranger sequencer. On the Series II, apart from Page R, you had MCL which is a text based sequencer. Actually very cool for making complex sequences where the sound parameters are controlled from within a sequence.
Help is at hand always with the help command.
The new CMI must be fun but is too pricey for most.

If you compare the Fairlight to other things on paper it will lose, however, it's a joy to use and sounds fantastic be it the older 8 bit grunge or the 100khz sampling of the Series III. Beautiful sounding converters and hardware.

But I understand for some it is just to archaic and old fashioned.

Another downside...all mine need repair but when I can invest a bit in them, they'll be sorted.
