Today I didn't have enough time to install my normal setup, so I record this with my DR05 in mp3 320k, 5 mn after arriving.
I just add a few dbs in the high to compensate the windscreens. It was outdoor.
Where was the DR05 setup (distance/mic orientation) relative to the band?
The band was in a 200degree circle around the Dr05. The recorder was on a tall, 3m high.
I was at the foot of the tall. The sound was marvellous and the DR05 doesn't give the great immersive listening I had. Because of the omni mics so close, the stereo image is very centred Then I don't know if it's because of the windscreens I adapted on the mics but there is a lot less richness in the sound than the reality and than when I record with my usual setup.
Why is it that none of these take S/PDIF? At least then they could double as bit-buckets (without relying on their internal A/D converters). Even my worthless sounding M-Audio MicroTrack recorder has an S/PDIF input... although I did have to cut away the case around it so it would accept a decent RCA cable, what a terrible design!
I agree. I've letter-bombed Tascam and Zoom asking for this this in these handheld devices. TOSlink in them, or even a combo optical i/o in the 1/8" jack would be a golden godsend for me.
So naturally I went out and picked up the new/improved model, the 05, and heavenly days-- this thing has specs, 0.05% THD and signal/noise of 92 dbs! 96/24!
.05 % THD isn't very good for digital. Most good ADC chips do .001%. 92 db s/n ratio isn't even 16 bits of resolution. It's 15 bits plus noise.

I know you're quite keen of eye, Jim-- so you obviously see that my gushing, unsophisticated tribute to any THD spec that includes a digit with a zero is now 8 years old and counting...
